Instructions on How to Properly Brush Your Child’s Smile

Posted .

Dr. Todd Eder and our Brownsburg Family Dental Care team care for your child’s smile and oral health, which is why we recommend brushing your child’s teeth twice a day. However, we understand that that might be a difficult task if you’re not sure how to properly clean their chompers in the first place.

So, to help you keep your child’s smile in tip-top shape, your dentist recommends following these tooth-brushing instructions:

Step 1: As you brush, use a child-sized, soft-bristled toothbrush with a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle to the gums of the upper and lower teeth.

Step 2: Move the toothbrush in a back-and-forth motion using short strokes along the gums and teeth. Use this same technique for each tooth and make sure to clean the back surfaces of the teeth as well.

Step 3: To reach behind the back surfaces of the front teeth, hold the brush in an upright position so you can reach the back surfaces with the tip of the brush.

Step 4: Brush the tongue when you are done brushing the teeth. Brushing the tongue will remove the bacteria that is on its surface.
